Suffolk 360: the leadership perspective

What makes Suffolk work? Who makes the decisions that shape our community? How can emerging and established leaders become more engaged in building an even stronger city?
Suffolk 360 is a civic leadership program designed to connect residents and professionals with the people, places, and organizations that make Suffolk thrive. Through interactive discussions, behind-the-scenes experiences, and meaningful networking opportunities, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the city’s operations, challenges, and opportunities while building relationships with fellow community leaders.
Whether you are looking to expand your civic involvement, strengthen your leadership skills, or simply deepen your connection to Suffolk, Suffolk 360 offers a unique opportunity to learn, collaborate, and make a lasting impact.
Suffolk 360 will be moderated by the Honorable Hellivi Holland. The Honorable Helivi L. Holland serves as a judge of Virginia’s Fifth Judicial Circuit and made history as the first woman appointed to the circuit’s bench. Her distinguished public service career includes roles as a General District Court judge, Suffolk City Attorney, Director of the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice, and prosecutor in Suffolk and Portsmouth.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
Suffolk 360 is designed for emerging and established leaders who:
- Live or work in the City of Suffolk
- Demonstrate a commitment to serving their community
- Want to expand their knowledge of local government and community organizations
- Are interested in building relationships with fellow leaders
- Are passionate about helping shape Suffolk’s future
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Participants will explore the many facets of Suffolk through seven engaging sessions, including:
- Government & Suffolk History
- Public Safety
- Business & Economic Development
- Conservation, Recreation, Arts & Culture
- Health & Housing
- Education
- Infrastructure & Community Development
The program also includes a Saturday field experience at the Great Dismal Swamp (date TBD), offering participants a unique look at one of Suffolk’s most treasured natural resources.
PROGRAM SCHEDULE
September – December 2026
Seven biweekly Tuesday evening sessions from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
One Saturday field experience (optional, date TBD)
Sessions are held at locations throughout Suffolk, providing participants with firsthand exposure to the facilities and organizations that serve our community.
Session dates are as follows: September 19, September 29, October 13, October 27, November 10, December 1, December 15.

Class Size: 30 participants
Application Deadline: August 15, 2026
Applicants will be selected based on their demonstrated interest in leadership, civic engagement, and commitment to the Suffolk community.

PROGRAM INVESTMENT
Participation in Suffolk 360 requires a $50 program fee, payable upon acceptance into the program.
The program fee supports the cohort’s Community Impact Project. As part of the program, participants will work together to identify a local nonprofit or community organization and present a collective donation in support of its mission, leaving a lasting impact on the Suffolk community.
By participating in Suffolk 360, you are investing not only in your own leadership development, but also in giving back to the community you serve.
