Suffolk Foundation Awards $350,000 in Grants

Suffolk, VA, December 10, 2024 — In 2025 the Suffolk Foundation awarded over $350,000 to nonprofits serving Suffolk and Western Tidewater through its Community Impact Grants program and through the Community Action Coalition of Virginia Fund.

ACCESS College Foundation: $15,000 for educational advisory services and scholarship assistance for Suffolk Public School students ($6800 Community Impact Grant, plus $8200 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

American Diabetes Association: $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for the 2026 Tour de Cure event in Smithfield, Virginia

American Red Cross of Coastal Virginia: $5000 for emergency financial assistance for victims of house fires in Suffolk and Western Tidewater ($4000 Community Impact Grant, plus $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Boys & Girls Club of Southeast Virginia: $2000 Community Impact Grant for the Franklin Boys and Girls Club

Bridge the Gap Outreach Center: $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for the Giving Box Project, supporting families who are struggling to meet basic household needs

Children’s Center: $3100 to provide short-term funding to low-income families with emergency circumstances to continue childcare and/or therapy services ($2100 Community Impact Grant, plus $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Children’s Harbor: $2900 to provide vouchers for low-income families with emergency circumstances for childcare at the Suffolk Children’s Harbor ($1900 Community Impact Grant, plus $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Coalition Against Poverty in Suffolk: $13,500 to provide emergency rent assistance, utility assistance, and winter shelter to Suffolk residents in financial crisis ($7200 Community Impact Grant, plus $6300 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Communities In Schools of Hampton Roads: $6400 to provide integrated student supports to youth at five locations in Suffolk Public Schools ($3900 Community Impact Grant, plus $2500 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Community Outreach Coalition: $2500 Community Impact Grant to fund Personal Care Aide training for Suffolk residents, removing financial barriers to entering the high-demand home healthcare field

Cornerstone Ballet Company: $2500 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for scholarships for students who cannot otherwise afford to participate in ballet programs

Cultured Pearls Foundation of Suffolk: $3000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for the Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (CHIPP) Program

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (Suffolk Chapter): $5000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for school backpack and little library programs

Family 4 Eternity: $2150 to purchase food for community meal programs in Franklin and Southampton County ($1500 Community Impact Grant, plus $650 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore: $13,800 to purchase food for distribution to Suffolk and Western Tidewater residents through the Franklin Food Pantry ($7800 Community Impact Grant, plus $6000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

ForKids: $20,000 to support ForKids’ programs in Suffolk and Western Tidewater, including shelter, housing, education, and case management for families facing housing instability and poverty ($8500 Community Impact Grant, plus $11,500 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Franklin Cooperative Ministry: $2000 for the Franklin Cooperative Ministry’s hygiene pantry ($1700 Community Impact Grant, plus $300 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Friends of Foster Care: $5900 to provide tutoring services to foster youth in Suffolk and Western Tidewater ($2900 Community Impact Grant, plus $3000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Genieve Shelter: $3000 to provide emergency shelter services to victims fleeing violence and their children ($1000 Community Impact Grant, plus $2000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast: $3500 to support the Community Troop Program, allowing underserved girls in Suffolk and Western Tidewater to participate in the Girl Scouts ($2500 Community Impact Grant, plus $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Girls on the Run Hampton Roads: $4600 for summer camp scholarships for low-income girls from Suffolk and Western Tidewater ($2600 Community Impact Grant, plus $2000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Goodz Foundation: $2000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for the back-to-school drive and field day, and for scholarships for students from Suffolk

Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton Roads: $5000 to help cover costs of repairs, ADA modifications, and/or wheelchair ramp installation for homes of low-income families in Suffolk or Western Tidewater ($3500 Community Impact Grant, plus $1500 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Heart of Gold Shelter: $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for the Empower Her Gold Mind Program

Hero Kids Foundation: $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for Hero Kids’ core programs

Historic St. Luke’s: $1000 Community Impact Grant to develop a module on indigenous history for the St. Luke’s self-guided tour app

Hope for Suffolk: $3200 to support the Youth Workforce Development and Agriculture Program ($1200 Community Impact Grant, plus $2000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Isle of Wight Christian Outreach Program: $7800 to provide food, emergency financial assistance, home repairs, and other services to people in need in Isle of Wight County ($4800 Community Impact Grant, plus $3000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Meals On Wheels Suffolk & Isle of Wight: $12,000 to provide emergency meals at no cost to home-bound individuals across Suffolk and Isle of Wight ($7200 Community Impact Grant, plus $4800 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Nansemond River Preservation Alliance: $17,700 for environmental educational opportunities through the Watershed Initiative Program for students within Suffolk Public Schools ($7700 Community Impact Grant, plus $10,000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Rawls Museum Arts: $2500 for educational programming and outreach efforts ($1500 Community Impact Grant, plus $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Riddick’s Folly House Museum: $2000 for operating purposes ($1000 Community Impact Grant, plus $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Safe House Project: $3000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for emergency services for trafficking survivors in Suffolk and/or Western Tidewater

Salvation Army of Suffolk: $23,500 for the Emergency Family Assistance Program ($7500 Community Impact Grant, plus $16,000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Senior Services of Southeast Virginia: $4500 for the Senior Emergency Fund to provide direct financial aid to low-income seniors from Suffolk and Western Tidewater with emergency needs ($2500 Community Impact Grant, plus $2000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Suffolk Art League: $6375 for school programs, public art projects, and classes ($4375 Community Impact Grant, plus $2000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts: $20,000 for adult and youth education and outreach programs ($7000 Community Impact Grant, plus $13,000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Suffolk Cheer Fund: $2500 Community Impact Grant to provide toys for children in need at Christmas time

Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center: $20,600 for food security and wellness programs, and the organization’s operations ($7600 Community Impact Grant, plus $13,000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Suffolk Education Foundation: $2000 Community Impact Grant for the Teacher Supply Store in the Suffolk Public School System

Suffolk Nansemond Historical Society: $5500 for technology needs, including computers, printers, and/or wiring ($2500 Community Impact Grant, plus $3000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Suffolk Public Schools: $2000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for environmental science education for sixth graders at the Saunders Superfund Site

Suffolk Sheriff’s Office Charities: $6500 for the Senior Expo and/or Santa for Seniors ($3500 Community Impact Grant, plus $3000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Suffolk Sister Cities International: $2000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for prizes for winners of the Youth Artists and Authors Showcase

Tidewater Youth Services Foundation: $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for museum excursions for young people in the Tidewater Youth Services Commission programs

Up Center: $5000 to address mental health needs in Suffolk ($4000 Community Impact Grant, plus $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Virginia Legal Aid Society: $15,000 to provide legal advice, representation, education, and outreach to low-income residents of Suffolk and Western Tidewater ($5000 Community Impact Grant, plus $10,000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

Virginia Opera Association: $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for the performance of “Dragon’s Breath” in Suffolk Public Schools

Virginia Symphony: $1000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund for performances in the Suffolk Public Libraries

Western Tidewater Free Clinic: $30,800 to provide healthcare to low-income, un/underinsured residents of Suffolk and Western Tidewater ($10,800 Community Impact Grant, plus $20,000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

WHRO Public Media: $5000 for the First Books and Literacy Van programs in Suffolk ($2500 Community Impact Grant, plus $2500 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)

YMCA of South Hampton Roads: $18,383 to provide financial subsidies to low-income families for the before- and after-school care and summer camp programs at the Suffolk YMCA ($6383 Community Impact Grant, plus $12,000 from the Community Action Coalition Fund)
