Nansemond River High School Receives the 2009 Howard D. Mast Memorial Scholarship

The Suffolk Foundation is pleased to announce the 2009 recipient of the Howard D. Mast Memorial Scholarship (HMMS) is Daria Godunova, a senior at Nansemond River High School. (Pictured above, third from left.) Daria is the Number 1 seed on the Nansemond River Girl’s Tennis Team and was assisted by Mr. Mast while he was coaching the Nansemond River Boy’s Team.  Some of the advice Mr. Mast shared with Daria has helped her not only on the tennis court but has helped her positively deal with any challenges that may have confronted her.

In making the selection, the committee reviewed the applicant’s academic performance, extracurricular activities, character, and recommendations.   The Committee was impressed with Daria’s numerous academic, athletic, and service achievements and awards.  Daria will be attending the College of William and Mary in the fall of 2009.  The $1,000 scholarship will be sent directly to the College to assist with tuition or other university fees.

Congratulations to Daria Godunova, a deserving student, who knows that nothing worthwhile can be gained without dedication and hard work, a teaching of Mr. Mast.   The Suffolk Foundation wishes her well in all her future endeavors.
