THE COLONEL FRED V. CHERRY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($2,000.00)

Ryan Lemonte Askew, a Nansemond River High School senior is the recipient of the $2,000.00 Colonel Fred V. Cherry Scholarship. The Scholarship was presented at the Nansemond River Senior Awards Program on Wednesday, May 20th in the school auditorium at 6:30 p.m.

The Suffolk Foundation is pleased to announce that Ryan Lemonte Askew, a Nansemond River High School senior, is the recipient of the $2,000.00 Col. Fred V. Cherry Scholarship. The Colonel Cherry Scholarship was established to honor Colonel Cherry, a Suffolk native and a Viet Nam veteran who was captured and held as a Prisoner of War.

In making the selection, the distribution committee reviewed the applicant’s academic performance, extracurricular activities, character, and recommendations. The committee was impressed with Ryan’s academic and co-curricular activities. It was evident Ryan is a hard worker as shown by his enrollment in the Project Lead the Way Engineering Magnet Program and maintaining a 3.57 GPA. Ryan a Beta Club member and worked as Library Aide.

Ryan will be attending Old Dominion University next year to pursue a career in Civil Engineering. The $2,000 scholarship will be sent directly to the University. Congratulations to Ryan Lemonte Askew, a student who has demonstrated a commitment to his studies and doing his best in whatever he undertakes. The Suffolk Foundation is proud to have the opportunity to award the Colonel Fred V. Cherry Scholarship to a very deserving student and wishes him well in all his future endeavors.
